A Lot – Grammar Tip of the Day

Published by Cynthia at 3:32 pm under Daily Posts

Okay, this Grammar Tip of the Day may or may not be a regular thing, but I have grammar pet peeves that bug me up one side and down the other. And so I’m going to post them… why not? LOL. I am a writer at heart, even though my anxiety keeps me from writing way too much of the time.

So here is today’s tip:

‘A Lot’ is Two Words

Yes, it’s true. When writing A Lot, it is two words. Many, many people write it as one word… alot. This just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and sends shivers down my spine.

If you like something a lot, please, make sure you write it as two words, which is grammatically, and spellingly (lol that is not a word) correct!

Very good. Though I must say that I am not sure I have ever seen alot as one word. How about helluva? Is that two words or one? :)

I have my pet peeves also. And one is use of “myself”. People are so worried about not using it when they should that they are using it in the wrong places most of the time.

Hm.. I haven’t seen this happen alot (hehehehe I’m a little evil witch aren’t i?), but I would have to say I agree with you. My grammatical pet peeve is too hard to avoid so I don’t bother getting bothered by it any more… anyway, spread the word… maybe one day all English will be easier for people to get a hang of.

how about “eventhough” is it one or two words? I see a lot of bloggers especially high-profile ones write it as one but when I write articles in MS Word I often get a wrong spelling for that.

Hi Kim.. interesting about ‘myself’. I’ll have to look that up as I’m not, actually, familiar with the correct usage. And I think helluva is one word. LOL
