In the Hotel

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 28-03-2008

Well, thought I’d post here too, though most of my post will be on Tip Tail this weekend. I’m doing Flyball in St. George, Utah. Well, tomorrow and Sunday we will. Chase and me. Tatum is along for the ride and the socialization.

The hotel is nice, like a motel 6 really, just more expensive. It’s the Red Cliffs Inn. The internet sucks. My laptop can’t detect the wireless so they loaned me a cable. If I hold the cable in tight to the laptop, it works okay. Otherwise I time out half the time. Oh well.

I’m using BlogDesk for this post. Hopefully it’ll be quicker than going right to the blog. :) I’m going to get to bed… have to get up bright and early. No rest for me or these dogs!

Turn OFF the Music!

I’ve been browsing around a lot of Entrecard blogs lately.. and there is a recurring theme among many of the bloggers who have been doing the same.

We hate hate hate… HATE, HATE going to a blog and having music blaring our of our computer speakers.

I will not drop a card on you if you have music on your blog. Please, don’t force me, and others, to listen to whatever music you think the whole world should like. Not only is it just obnoxious and annoying, for those of us who occasionally visit blogs from work, having sound suddenly blaring out of our computers is just bad for everyone involved.

So please, turn off your music.

Hypotheses vs. Theory

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 27-03-2008

This isn’t really a grammatical pet peeve, maybe it’s more of a scientific one.

Hypothesis implies insufficient evidence to provide more than a tentative explanation (a hypothesis explaining the extinction of the dinosaurs). Theory implies a greater range of evidence and greater likelihood of truth (the theory of evolution).

I don’t think this is a very good explanation… it’s from Meriam-Webster.com. My interpretation is, basically, that a hypothesis is untested. While a Theory is tested.

So when you say you have a theory about something… if it’s untested, you really, most likely, have a hypothesis. :)

Oh The Back Pain

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 27-03-2008

Back pain officially sucks. Not only does my back (still) hurt, my entire outlook on life is in the dumps. I’m cranky. I’m tired. And i’m just sore.

I’m better… mind… a little bit. What I’ve been doing has helped. Not sure if the Arnica has helped.. but I’m still trying it. The Topricin does help, and it feels good all over, my neck, back, and my ankle that is still sprained and may be through all this year until dog sport season calms down again.

I’m still sleeping on the couch. Last night Tatum was by my feet for a while, and Muffit jumped up by my belly. Muffit stayed there all night. He is so small, he doesn’t take up much space. Then Levi had enough of being alone on the bed so came and whined at me. I put him up by my head… and that boy is not small. But we snuggled together and fell asleep and were comfy. :)

I do love my dogs.

I’ve Outgrown Thunderbird

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 26-03-2008

Yes.. I hate to admit it, but I am going to move away from Thunderbird. I like Thunderbird. I like the layout, the name, the spam filter… I don’t want to stop using Thunderbird. Really I don’t. But there is one thing that has been bothering the heck out of me for the last while that I just can’t deal with anymore.

Thunderbird is beastly slow.

I get a ton of emails. I don’t know how many a ton is… but it’s a lot. And, apparently, Thunderbird can’t handle the number I get. If I don’t clean out my folders on a regular basis, Thunderbird practically slows to a crawl. Clicking on an email to read it can take upwards of 10 seconds or more. It’s annoying beyond acceptance.

So I did some looking to find an alternative to Thunderbird and I’m trying out The Bat! for a replacement. It is supposed to be a good solid email client that can handle thousands of emails without a blink. The downside is it has a cost. And I’m pretty poor right now… so I’m going to try it out for the 30 day free trial and see how I like it.

So far, I like it a lot. It is said to be for power users, which really I am. I can configure it to minute detail, it seems. And, from what I’ve read on reviews, there’s a lot more that it can do that I don’t even know about yet. So, we’ll see how it goes over the next 30 days!

I slept on the couch

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 26-03-2008

Well, last night I slept on the couch. My husband is hassling me because I’m trying every different sleeping place in the house. :p My queen size bed, the single in the spare bedroom, and now the couch. Well, the couch is, so far, the best!

It’s soft and my body just sank into it, and I think it conformed to my back and my butt and so my back had more support. I woke up with my back sore, again, but not nearly as bad as it has been the last couple of days.

I’m a bit worried about going to St. George this weekend, I hope they have soft beds in the hotel. If not I may be in mortal pain again when I wake up. Ugh.. not fun. We’ll see. I’m working from home today, sitting on the couch with my back supported, and the supporting pillows are soft. Oh.. and I’m using some Topricin Cream or Arnica Homeopathic, as per my friend over at Fuzzy Logic, who always has some good natural things for health!

A Lot - Grammar Tip of the Day

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 25-03-2008

Tagged Under :

Okay, this Grammar Tip of the Day may or may not be a regular thing, but I have grammar pet peeves that bug me up one side and down the other. And so I’m going to post them… why not? LOL. I am a writer at heart, even though my anxiety keeps me from writing way too much of the time.

So here is today’s tip:

‘A Lot’ is Two Words

Yes, it’s true. When writing A Lot, it is two words. Many, many people write it as one word… alot. This just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and sends shivers down my spine.

If you like something a lot, please, make sure you write it as two words, which is grammatically, and spellingly (lol that is not a word) correct!

Gonna Sleep on the Couch

Filed Under (Daily Posts, Health) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 25-03-2008

Tagged Under :

Well, I think I’m going to sleep on the couch tonight. Last night I slept on a different mattress in the house. And I woke this morning in just as much back pain as I was in yesterday. It was awful. Today I was a bit smarter and downed three Ibuprophins right away. By the time I’d fed the dogs (that’s a trick with a sore back, I’ll tell ya) and showered, the pills had kicked in and I was feeling a bit better, at least I could move without terribly pain.

I’m at work again today. As I sat on the couch this morning with the dogs loving me, I really considered staying home. But I worked Monday this week so I could take Friday off and not use my annual, because I’m going to St. George for a flyball tournament. Ugh! So I didn’t want to stay home and take annual! Not only am I poor on money lately, I’m also poor on annual leave. I gotta conserve.

Maybe i’ll need travel insurance for my trip, in case my back goes out while I’m down there. Ugh. I’m gonna look into a Chiropractor today, I have a recommendation, just been too chicken to call.

The couch is softer, so if I sleep on that tonight, maybe tomorrow I won’t wake up in mortal pain. Costco didn’t have any of my mattress toppers in stock, so I have to wait for delivery.

Gonna Get a Mattress Topper

Filed Under (Daily Posts) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 24-03-2008

Okay I have ordered a Mattress Topper. Was going to get one from Ikea, where I bought my Sultan Mattress, but I opted for Costco instead. I like the descriptions better. And doesn’t Ikea know that your online presence is critical? Information, people!

I even found a blog that has a review of it, it’s the Novaform Choices Topper. He likes it, I hope I will like it. I like this part of his review:

It converted my super hard mattress into a marshmallow.

That is what I’m hoping for, for my aching back and neck! Now I’m going to go sit on the couch with a heating pad and be a bum.

I’m An Idiot with a Sore Back

Filed Under (Daily Posts, Health) by User ImageCynthia [More Me!] on 24-03-2008

Tagged Under : ,

That’s me. Number One Idiot. I won’t even say what I did, but I woke up at 2am with awful back pain, the dogs were stress panting in my face and on my head, and it took me about a half hour to figure out what was going on. My pager had gone off, and I hadn’t heard it.

Needless to say, I could hardly get out of bed my lower back hurt so much. At that time I admitted to myself that yeah, at 40 I guess I am getting old and my body doesn’t heal up as well as it has been. I made some poor decisions and now I’m trying to fix them at work. So far, so good.

Anyway, stupid day. That’s what I get for working on a Monday. I’m taking Friday off to go to a flyball tournament, hopefully that’ll go better than this stupid day.

I need to do something about my back. Maybe get a soft pillowtop for my mattress, because I think it’s too hard and it’s hurting my back. Ugh. I can hardly bend over. I have to go straight down and bend at my knees, and that still hurts. Won’t be able to put the wine in the wine racks when I get home tonight, I’ll just have to lay around. Or maybe find a chiropractor. Ugh.
