Having a good site does not equate to a higher number in some cases. The frustration of being an actual web site developer is that someone that just writes words and posts it on wordpress can get a higher pagerank than someone that just spent the better part of a year developing a site from scratch using the latest development tools and years of college education. Really quite sad yet the reality of the world. Words translate to dollars. PageRank has become an obsession with webmasters and developers. If google was to allow paid links to be recognized then any crap site with deep pockets could go out and buy a bunch of links then out rank a site with good content. Links should indicate a site is good, not that they have a big advertising budget. Google did the right thing.
