There goes the Laptop

Unfortunately it seems my laptop broke today. It’s a compaq Presario M2000, I’ve had it for about a year and a half. I only had the one year standard warranty.
It will not power on. It will occasionally, but not consistently. We are thinking it’s the motherboard that has gone bad. Either that or some part of the power, though I’m not sure how that works. I will be taking it into the shop tomorrow to see if they can tell me how much it will be to repair.
Hopefully we’ll be able to retrieve everything on the hard drive. I may not be on the web much until I get a new laptop. Or get this one fixed. We’ll see, I’m on my old desktop now, good thing we have this computer. But the old huge monitor is really bothering my eyes.
I miss my laptop.

Oh man, similar thing happened with my laptop. I took it to Best Buy and had them test some things for me, they do that for free. First the battery, then the power cord. Both were fine. They said that 90% of the time when a laptop wont charge or power up, it’s because of the connector where the power cord goes. The soldering comes loose. But 10% of the time its the soldering from the connector to the mother board – in that case, it’s new laptop time. I sure hope you can get it powered up long enough to get everything off!! How frustrating!!!!
Keep us posted K?

I had a Compaq Presario several years ago, and the *exact* same thing happened to me. I was cruising along with no hint of any problems, and then one day the thing just didn’t power on.
I spent $100 to have some computer shop run diagnostics, they said it was one of two problems. Since that didn’t help me (I would have had to spend a couple hundred on parts, no matter which problem it was), I just went with a new laptop altogether.

Hi, I’m reading via the Bumpzee No Nofollow | I Follow | DoFollow Community RSS feed.
Ironically, the one and only thing that I would ever consider buying the mostly-useless extended warranty on is a laptop – because of what you described. As it is, my laptop has its own set of problems – from a fan that never worked right, to random shutdowns and freezes, to strange noises from the hard drive.
I only use it when there’s storms in the area and I’m forced into the basement now; it’s out of warranty and I have a really good desktop system to work on now. When it was in warranty, I managed to get almost the whole system replaced – hard drive, fan, screen, and a couple of other parts – for nothing, essentially paying the warranty for itself.

Hey Johann, ugh… well I am hoping it can be fixed, but we’ll see. I am going to take it into the shop later on today. I have to put the old, original, hard drive back in. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the data off the hard drive I take out.

Hey Chronic Consumer… that doesn’t make me feel better!
But I’d rather know the truth. I’m taking it in this afternoon to have them check it out. A friend at work just bought a new Acer on ebay for $470, looks nice, and he got the extended warranty. What were the two problems it could have been? from what I have read, it can be the power connection.

Hi Seph, yeah, I think an extended warranty for laptops is a good idea. I bought one for my new camcorder too, these tech toys definitely can go out too early. Thanks for your input.

Oh my God . . . . . I am planning to buy a laptop and hopefully I would be getting it in a couple of days, but by reading all this, I am getting scared . . . . .

From what I have read it seems no laptop is safe from breakage. You just never know until you get one. I hope yours works out. Get the extended warranty!

Sounds sadly familliar, the Compaq M2000 mobo’s are bad. Do a google search and you will see this is a widespread, international problem. Compaq/HP will do nothing for it, I am searching for any consumer advocacy groups who have taken action on this issue. I found 1 instance of a lady in Great Britain who did receive a refund after a long drawn out process. This is BS, this problem is big and they have to have realized by now they received bad cap’s. Too bad they are not making it right.
