Eyes are Important

Tagged Under :

Ever since I was a wee tot I’ve had eye troubles. I wore glasses as a kid, and when I was old enough, Jr High/High School, I started wearing contacts. I started with hard contacts. And I HATED touching my eyes. I hated the feel of them in my eyes (yes I could feel them, still can). I would put my finger out in front of my eyes when I was walking so I didn’t have to move my eyeballs. I hated the eye doctor more than the dentist.

In my older years… mid 30s probably, I started thinking about Lazik. So I went into the eye doc. They put me in soft contacts for a while so my corneas would go back to ‘normal’. Well, after about 2 years of ever-changing eyes, I finally had an optometrist look at my images and ask me, “Has anyone ever told you, you have Keratoconus?” I was like.. uh, no, what’s that?

Grrrr. He said I should see an Ophthalmologist. They are MDs, where Optometrists are not. So I went in. Sure enough, I have Keratoconus. It’s a form of Myopia where the cornea gets really thin and is kinda volcano shaped, too. So, no Lazik for me. It frustrated me that I went to probably 3 different people about Lazik, and none of them found Keratoconus. And now, and for the rest of my life, I have to wear RGB (Rigid Gas Permeable) contacts in order to see. Soft don’t correct me right, nor do glasses.

Anyway, healthy eyes are very important. I go into my Ophthalmologist once a year now for a checkup. Since I have this condition (aka disease?) it is covered under my regular insurance and my contacts are considered medically necessary. Good for my pocketbook, but I’d rather have normal eyes.

Many people will suffer from age related eye diseases. Which, ugh, probably doesn’t bode well for me. But there is a good website out there about it, that I’ll be looking into some more. It’s called Aging Eye. It has a lot of very interesting stuff!
